When it comes to the safety of your family, you need to know which smoke detector is best. Smoke alarms that are outdated, poorly installed, or incorrectly positioned give you and your family a false sense of security. At Smoke Alarms Photoelectric, we only sell top quality, legally compliant smoke detectors in our online store. Because your safety is our priority.
There are different types – which smoke detector is best?
There are two main types of smoke detectors: ionisation and photoelectric smoke detectors. Some combination smoke alarms are available, known as dual sensor smoke alarms. Other options include combined optical smoke and heat alarms, as well as combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. However, new Queensland legislation specifies that homeowners and landlords need to install interconnected photoelectric smoke detectors in all domestic properties.
Photoelectric smoke alarms use cutting edge technology to give your family an earlier warning.
Previously, homes tended to be fitted with smoke alarms that relied on an ionization sensor. The problem with ionization smoke alarms is that they rely on visible, flaming fires: only a visible fire sets off the alarm. This equates to a slower response time, leaving your family with less time to escape a house fire.
Photoelectric smoke alarms, on the other hand, respond to smoke particles in the air. Therefore, no matter the type of fire, these smoke detectors will provide an earlier warning and give you more time to ensure your family’s safety.
When determining which smoke detector is best, it really comes down to the level of safety it provides and ensuring that it is legally compliant. We have done the research for you, and only sell the latest photoelectric smoke alarms that not only feature progressive technology, but are compliant with the latest changes in Queensland legislation.

Is your Queensland property compliant with the new legislation for January 2022?
All Australian states require residential homes to be fitted with smoke alarms. These laws vary from state to state. In Queensland, there is new legislation that will be coming into effect from 1 January 2022. This affects all residential property owners in Brisbane and Queensland as a whole.
This new legislation sets out smoke alarm requirements for all domestic dwellings that are leased or sold in Queensland. If you are a landlord, you will not be legally allowed to lease your property from 1 January 2022 unless it is compliant. (Tenants are under no legal obligation to ensure the smoke detectors are compliant.) These new legal requirements will apply to all residential properties in Queensland from 1 January 2027.
The new legal requirements for residential smoke alarms in Queensland are as follows:
- All new smoke alarms must comply with Australian standards AS3786:2014.
- This means that all new smoke alarms must be photoelectric.
- In addition, all new smoke alarms must be interconnected.
- Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in every hallway that connects bedrooms, and be present on each level of the home. If there isn’t a bedroom on a particular level of the home, at least one smoke alarm must be installed on that level along the route that is most likely to be used to exit the home in an emergency.
- All smoke alarms need to be tested every year, and replaced every 10 years.

A qualified electrician has to install wired smoke alarms that are connected to your mains power. This is an additional cost, on top of the hefty price tag that tends to come with these smoke alarms. In the case of a power outage, these smoke alarms should have a battery backup.
At Smoke Alarms Photoelectric, our alarms are powered by a 10 year 3V lithium battery. This means you get up to a decade of cutting edge smoke detection in your home without having to change the battery. This is far more beneficial than smoke detectors that use a 9v battery. These smoke alarms require new batteries at least once a year, which is an added cost and inconvenience. And you will also have to deal with the frequent beeping to alert you of a low battery.
It has never been more affordable to protect your family with top quality smoke detectors.
